The federal government mandated this change over 10 years ago. Digital signals take up less space, and the government will allocate some of this space to wireless communications for emergency service providers (firefighters and police officers) at designated frequencies for communications. The Government will sell additional space for other advanced wireless services provided by non-government organizations or funding of other services such as Tsunami/Hurricane warning or coastal alert systems. Consumers benefit by having clearer reception than analog signals.
